VIRAL VACCINE PRODUCTION LABORATORY

Viral Vaccine Production Laboratory has been established in 1967, for the purpose of research and diagnosis of viral diseases and production effective vaccines by this way.

In 1969, during the Middle East Rindepest epidemia, Rinderpest and related diseases laboratory had been established as on submit of tissue culture labratory and started to produce rinderpest vaccine. Rinderpest vaccine is an attanuated lyophilized vaccine prepared in primary calf kidney tissue culture with attenuated KO strain. Laboratory has a 20 million doses capacity of producing Rinderpest vaccine. After the declaration of temporary freness of Rinderpest disease in 1998, vaccine administrations were ceased.

In 1977, after the emergence of Bluetongua disease at Western regions of Turkey, Bluetongue vaccine production laboratory established at the sama unıt. The vaccine is an attenuated monovalan liyophilized type 4 blue tongue vaccine which a prepared in primary lamb kidney cell culture with South African BT type 4 vaccine strain. It is used for the purpose of at the areas where the disease is seen. In addition, attenuation studies of BT type 9 and 16 those were isolated from the field during epidemia in 1999 which was seen at sama European as well as in our country. It is also planned to produce these vaccines.

In the scope of the technological transfer between CIRAD-EMVT France and Etlik Veterinary Control Central Research Institute, PPR vaccine master seed strain was brought to Turkey by Collette GRILLET with the permission of ministry in 2001. PPR (Peste des Petits Ruminants) vaccine is an attenuated lyophilized vaccine and can be administered to all sheep and goats at all ages for the purpose of protection against disease. In 2002, PPR production studies were accomplished and dispatched to the field. In recent, in the scope of the PPR eradication studies, vaccines for the field demands is being produced (15-20 million doses) and dispatched.

If necessary, research and development studies are being conducted about developing novel vaccines against animal diseases those are important for bovines and ovines.

Also primary cell cultures are being prepeared with various animals' tissues for the purpose of vaccine production and quality control. In addition, maintanence of these cell lines and other immortal cell lines is performed for vaccine production and control studies.

A. DUTIES

1-Production of Rinderpest Vaccine (live, attenuated, lyophilized vaccine prepeared in cell culture with Kabate O strain) against Rirnderpest disease of cattle.

2-Production of PPR Vaccine (live, attenuated, lyophilized vaccine containing attenuated Nigeria 75/1 master seed strain) against Peste des Petits Ruminants disease of sheep and goats.

3-Being the only laboratory in the country which produce vaccine (live, attenuated, lyophilized vaccine prepeared in cell culture with SA BT/4 strain) against bluetongue disease serotype 4 of sheep.

4-To produce dilution fluid for lyophilized vaccines.

5-Maintaining emergency vaccine stocks which are important for animal health in case of Ministry demand.

6-As a cell culture laborotory; maintaining of cell culture collections established for vaccine production and control tests and integration new cell lines to the collection in case of any need. Production of these lines at industrial levels for the purpose of vaccine production.

7-As an internal quality control laboratory; performing control tests of any material wheather biological origins or not which are to be used in vaccine production. Performing routine control tests during or after vaccine production.

8-As a quality loboratory; being the only laboratory which performs final control tests of Bluetongue vaccine for sales permission.ser

9-Performing safety studies of vaccines produced in the isolation fold which belongs to the viral vaccine production unit.

10-Developing new vaccines for the field demands.

11-Involving in the commisions formed by the Ministry and Directory of Institute, prepearing expert visions, serving in the subjects which belong to its expertise.

12-Carrying out research activities.

13-To organise in-service training studies.

14-Cooperating with international organisations, Universities and Instutions.

15-Inspection of protocol files of Veterinary Biological Products against viral animal diseases which are attended to gain sales certificate of marketing and taking place in the commisions of these issues.

16-Taking place in the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) commisions as a GMP     inspector.
